The pandemic had driven the United States to a single-payer health care system. To address all of the problems with so many different healthcare plans, the U.S. took the first steps toward a computer-run medical system. The Patient Care Initiative built a comprehensive database containing essential medical data for everyone for a 10-year period of time. That database would feed and nurture an artificial intelligence system to autonomously diagnose patients.
This book reminds us that technology is only as trustworthy as the people who control it. AI and computerized healthcare systems may improve the practice of medicine, but no matter how many controls are built into a system, they can still be manipulated by corporations, governments, and individuals. The real danger is not with the technology itself—it is with the misuse of the technology.
Dr. Alex Korman is an intriguing lead character. I love the unspoken nicknames he would assign people like “praying mantis man” and “whale man.” Dr. Korman, still a practicing physician, was spending more time as an author, podcaster, and lecturer. He was a semi-famous celebrity. During the investigation of the death of his mentor, Max Fischer, Alex refused to accept official explanations simply because they came from respected institutions. The main characters, Alex Korman, Flores, and Max Fischer, confronted corruption at enormous personal sacrifice.
I liked the pacing—the steady building of tension and the gradual unfolding of the conspiracy.
I found a few typos, so the book could use another round of proofreading. But overall, A Conspiracy of Data is an intelligent and thought-provoking techno-thriller that reminds us that AI systems must have boundaries and governance to ensure that humans always remain in control of final life-affecting decisions. Readers who enjoy medical and technology-based thrillers and conspiracy fiction will find this book very entertaining. I am giving this book a rating of 4 stars.
